Queen Bees, and Wannabes!

Hi Kara,

I will be diligently watching the progress you make with this topic! I think its quite a difficult one really, and one that has not been researched enough. At my (all girls catholic) highschool we definitely had cliques despite a lack of boys to impress! It was interesting to see how popularity changed as we progressed through the grades though! In younger years, the popular girls were those with more 'sexual' experience, who wore makeup and the right clothes. We wore a uniform so they had to make do with wearing knee high socks and jewellery. However, as we progressed into senior school, the bitchy, boycrazy girls stopped being perceived as popular and instead received more negative labels. The popular girls were the ones who were smart, nice to everyone, and had a good sense of humour. Granted, they were always still pretty! I read a great book on this a few years ago which i think you'll find useful- its what mean girls was based on. Its called 'Queen Bees and Wannabes' by Rosalind Wiseman. Have a look and let me know what you think. Ive got a copy you can borrow if you would like!

Thanks for your response lauren. In my high school it was similar to your experience, girls with more sexual experience, wore the right clothes/makeup were the popular group. I think not only sexually experienced but more socially experienced, ie. Parties, drinking ect.. I think it remained pretty much consistant through out high school. We were a co-ed private school, however I found alot of my friends from different schools all had similar 'groupings'. Anyway I'll keep posting. But thanks again for your response..

Hi Lauren,

I find it interesting to hear how the social system works at an all girls school. I went to an all boys school and the social system was a bit different, people mainly hungout with people who played the same sports or hobbies i.e the footy heads, the skegs etc. The most popular guys were generally those who were the best athletes.

It was funny to see in yr 11 when alot of new kids came to the school that the athletic guys made friends straight away - some even became house captains - whereas the shorty's fattys and dweebs struggled for a bit.

Sexual experiences began to matter a bit toward the end of school but most guys just made up phantom experiences anyway haha. There were some interesting tales told of a monday morning that were never verified haha

Good luck with blog 2,

cheers, Mike
